Ross From Friends has a new video for the track entitled “The Daisy,” off his forthcoming sophomore LP Tread due out October 22nd via Brainfeeder. The song’s title refers to opening steps used to solve the classic Rubik’s Cube puzzle. Rudá Santos directs the video for the cut, which was commissioned by Crack Magazine’s Three Minute program, which funds visual work from unsigned directors under 26. Featuring a cameo from Ross From Friends’ Felix Clary Weatherall, the video is a glimpse into the world of competitive speedcubing.
Regarding the upcoming album Tread, the British producer reveals that he reached a breaking point in his frustration with recording electronic hardware and instruments via the computer. This led him to create his own software, a plug-in called “Thresho,” available via Ableton’s Max For Live platform. The software left the musician free to create, allowing him to record while simultaneously cataloging the work with a time-stamp. This led to hours of experimentation as the producer amassed a trove of usable material for the record.
The title Tread, then, refers to this time spent experimenting with his gear and instruments. Though it also refers to the artist’s realization of the importance of place and family, particularly the South London neighborhood he and his relatives have inhabited for several generations. Walking the short distance from home to studio, he realized familial and personal memories mapped the area, often tying particular periods to places through the music he was listening to at the time. He explains:
“I’ve amassed all of these memories from a time spent just messing around in South London, as with ‘Thresho,’ I’ve amassed all of these recordings from sitting around and experimenting musically. Tread refers to the marks that I’ve been permanently leaving, both in my memories and throughout the process using ‘Thresho.'”
